warbird oil painting by canman
A new original 9”x 12” oil painting on panel "Warbird" has landed at Canman Creations. Warbird explores the tension between war and peace through striking symbolism
What does peace look like when it has spent centuries standing in the shadow of war?
My newest original oil painting, "Warbird," explores that question through symbolism, history, and reflection. The artwork depicts a mourning dove carrying an olive branch while perched atop a battle gauntlet rising from the ruins of a devastated city. Behind it, the sun rises through the wreckage, suggesting that even after destruction, renewal remains possible.
Since the founding of the United States in 1776, historians estimate that the nation has spent more than 90% of its existence involved in wars, military interventions, occupations, or active conflicts. Entire generations have grown up knowing war as a constant backdrop to modern life. While military service, sacrifice, and national defense have shaped the country, the painting asks viewers to consider the cost of perpetual conflict and whether humanity can imagine a different future.
Symbolism in Warbird
The Gauntlet represents the machinery of war—industrialized, relentless, and powerful. It rises from a landscape of collapsed buildings and ruined civilization, illustrating the long-lasting consequences of violence and conflict.
The mourning dove, traditionally associated with peace, carries an olive branch as a symbol of reconciliation and hope. Despite standing on the remnants of destruction, the bird remains calm and resilient.
The rising sun signifies rebirth, renewal, and the possibility of healing. It reminds us that peace is not simply the absence of war but the deliberate effort to create understanding, cooperation, and compassion.
The Message Behind the Painting
Warbird is not a political statement. It is a human statement.
The painting suggests that lasting peace requires more than treaties and ceasefires. It requires education, diplomacy, empathy, cultural understanding, and the courage to break cycles of retaliation and fear.
The dove does not erase the ruins beneath it. Instead, it chooses to land there and carry forward the first branch of a future that must be built intentionally.
As an artist, I wanted Warbird to spark conversation about the balance between strength and wisdom, power and compassion, conflict and reconciliation
